Afro Nation Festival unveils afrobeats documentary ‘A Movement’


Featuring interviews with key figures such as Musa Keys, Black Sherif, The Compozers, Camidoh, Kamo Mphela, and more.

Afro Nation, an annual music festival in Portugal, recently debuted a short film titled ‘Afro Nation: A Movement’. This documentary aims to highlight the impact and growth of Afrobeats and Amapiano, two rapidly growing music genres in Africa.

This 17-minute documentary, directed by Rita Guimarães, delves into the Afrobeats and Amapiano genres. It features interviews with key figures such as Musa Keys, a South African Amapiano pioneer; Ghanaian rapper Black Sherif; and the multi-platinum Afrobeat band, The Compozers. Other contributing artists include Camidoh, Kamo Mphela, Skyla Tylaa, and Nelson Freitas.

The documentary also features interviews with SMADE, the festival’s co-founder; Eddie Kadi, host of The Official UK Afrobeats Chart on BBC 1Xtra; and Afrobeats historian and podcaster Shopsydoo.

‘A Movement’ explores the significant influence of these genres, demonstrating their global reach. The film includes footage from previous Afro Nation events in Portugal, revealing unseen performances from renowned artists like Burna Boy, Wizkid, and Ayra Starr.
