Annie Nightingale, the first female presenter on BBC Radio 1 and the station’s longest-serving DJ, has passed away at the age of 83. Her family confirmed that she died on January 11th at her London home after a short illness.

Described as a “pioneer, trailblazer, and inspiration to many,” Nightingale’s passion for sharing music with audiences remained strong throughout her six-decade career on BBC TV and radio worldwide.

Born on April 1, 1940, Nightingale began her career in TV and newspapers before becoming the host of the popular 1960s TV pop show ‘That’s for Me.’

In the late 1960s, she joined BBC Radio 1, breaking barriers as the only female DJ for 12 years. Nightingale’s love for rock’n’roll and belief in the impact of music made her an iconic figure on TV and radio. She introduced the underground acid house scene to mainstream audiences and continued to support new music and artists.

Throughout her career, Nightingale received numerous awards and honors. In 2002, she was awarded an OBE for her contributions to radio broadcasting, followed by a CBE in 2020.

Her influence on the music industry and broadcasting will always be remembered.
