Property developers have recently submitted plans to transform the former nightclub, Printworks, into a cultural venue. The proposal, presented by British Land and AustralianSuper to Southwark Council, envisions the conversion of the 6,000-capacity club into a multifunctional space that will include office areas, an exhibition space, and a live music venue.
Situated in Surrey Quays, Printworks enjoyed a six-year stint as a renowned nightclub before closing its doors in 2022 due to redevelopment plans in the area. Currently, property developers are engaged in exclusive discussions with former Printworks operators, Broadwick Live, regarding the operation of a new music venue within the printing press.
Pending approval of the plans, the developers aim to collaborate with Broadwick Live and retain half of the site as a dedicated venue, while the other half will undergo transformation into offices and shops, as previously intended. The development will pay homage to the building’s original industrial style and printing presses, further enhancing its distinctive aesthetic.
The Press Halls of Printworks will be preserved, serving as the heart of the venue for hosting live music events, concerts, immersive art exhibitions, and corporate functions. Additionally, the Inkwells will be transformed into an immersive exhibition space, showcasing multi-disciplinary art shows and intimate music events, according to council documents.
While some existing architecture will be preserved, the plans propose adding a new rooftop space. This area will be used for performances, rehearsals, product launches, and talks. Additionally, the plans include office spaces with panoramic views of the Press Halls.
